What is the most important sewing tool or notion in your sewing box? If you ask most everyone that sews, the answer is a good pair of scissors.
We all have our favorites and after teaching the last few years I have ran across a lot of nasty scissors. The main reason is that many people who sew are not exposed to quality scissors and the cost is a little more when it comes to purchasing quality scissors. I would say that 75% of all sewing students that cut with a professional pair of scissors make the investment with in 6 months of cutting with a professional pair of scissors.
The Kai Scissor seems to be the favorite with professional drapery workrooms and slipcover fabricators. Kai has two price ranges the 5200 series which are medium priced and the 7200 Series which are my favorite. I started out with those ——-orange scissors that would only cut if they liked the fabric and do not ever cut paper with your fabric scissors! Some people actually have a pair of scissors for cutting polyester only and cotton only and silk only. When using the scissors with many fibers they will wear differently. (could be a wives tale) but that’s what I have been told.
The longer the blade the less strokes you will make and after years of cutting fabric you will understand the aches and pains of sore hands from cutting all day. In our workroom and classroom we have 5 pairs of the 7280 Kai Scissors, 3 pairs of 5250 and a dozen pairs of Kai small scissors ( a pair by every sewing machine).
If you didn’t get a new pair of Kai Scissors for the Holidays there is always Valentines or you just deserve a Great Pair of Kai Scissors.
