September National Sewing Month

September National Sewing Month

National Sewing Month – Home Decor Sewing

Ronald Regan declared Sept as National Sewing Month in 1982In 1982 President Ronald Regan declared September to be National Sewing Month.  It’s now more important than ever, because sewing jobs are leaving America and going overseas.   Because of the global market place sewing machine operator jobs fell by 77,00 in five years!*  All occupations like hand sewing, fabric mending and textile knitting have seen large declines in the last few years.

In 1967 Sewing was the American DreamSweatshops in1960's National Sewing Month

When Cambodian, Vietnamese and Laotian immigrant women came to America and were put into sweatshops sewing with industrial machines. They were stitching clothing,  outdoor wear, day-packs and duffel bags in the Seattle area. Living in Sacramento in the 60’s can remember all the sweatshops in San Francisco.  People were working for 25 cents an hour and sewing for hours in pack small rooms in vacant buildings.

It’s the late 20th -century variation on one of America’s oldest and most enduring themes: new immigrants, in pursuit of a better life working endlessly for low wages – making the most of their only competitive advantage, cheap labor. More about the America Dream.

Hello. One of my favorite sewing tools is a seam ripper. :-). I keep it handy and have no problem using it. Hope this comment counts as an entry to the contest. 🙂
